  • Hagan Youth Ski Touring Gear

by Michael Hagen October 25, 2021 2 min read 1 Comment

I get asked a lot: What gear do you recommend for kids?

We have a lot of options -

We now have three youth ski touring packages! All include our Boost Junior skis.

The Boost Junior ski is designed for kids - wide enough to offer float in soft snow while having sufficient sidecut to encourage carving. The hybrid glue skins are much easier for kids to handle. Transitions become pretty simple instead of a wrestling match.

One package includes the ATK Candy 5 binding which is very light. (Less than half the weight of the somewhat comparable Dynafit Rotation.) Matching hybrid (super easy handling) climbing skins are included. Skis, skins and bindings at just $649.99, a $150 savings.

New this year we have very attractively priced Pure Junior boots to match. The Pure Junior is available in sizes as small as Mondo 22.5. If your kid's feet are smaller, we have a new option this year with pre-installed rails for sliding on included alpine bindings and ski touring adapters.

Another package includes Boost Junior skis and matching hybrid skins, ATK Candy 5 bindings AND Pure Junior boots for just $949.99, a $250 savings.

Want to ski tour as a family but not sure if a dedicated touring setup is worth it just yet? The Hagan Boost Junior/VIST binding ski package is a super easy and inexpensive way to make initial forays into ski touring with your kid's existing alpine boots. When your kids want to ride the lifts, just leave the climbing skins and binding adapters behind and let them rail on the high performing Boost Junior skis and award-winning VIST VJ75 junior bindings!

    ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

If you kids would like to dip their toes into ski mountaineering (skimo) racing, and our big enough, they should definitely consider our  Ultra 65 race ski in the shorter 151cm length with matching skins and then either our  Ultra World Cup binding or the  Pure 8 binding.

Some kids may want to consider one of our Ultra, Pure or Core series skis. They come in lengths as short as 148cm for the Ultra 77, 152 for the Ultra 82 and 154cm for the Ultra 87. The Pures are as short as 140 for the Pure 75 and 148 for the Pure 83. The Core Lite 84 is as short as 148cm.

The Ultras and Core Lite 84 are considerably lighter for their size than the Boost Jr.

If you also need youth poles, we have a very high quality adjustable entry-level touring pole as well as our Ultra carbon fiber race pole in lengths as short as 110cm!

Please feel free to call or write with questions.

I don’t have this set, because it didn’t exist yet when I bought my kids set up, but I wish it had, because we ended up with something very similar, and the price for this set is amazing.
I thought I would write in anyway, in case it helps other parents.

My 10 year old has the adult version of this binding, and hybrid skins, and they allow her to easily step in and transition from ski to skin and back. She can easily rip skins with skis on, and do all other operations of the binding on her own. Very user friendly set up.

Before this she tried some super sticky hotmelt glue skins and that meant she had to take the skis off, and hand them to me to rip skins, or even pull them apart.
